The new Ai Pin from Humane just might be the most innovative AI device yet.
It’s an exciting time to be alive, with artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly injecting itself into every facet of our lives, from writing our love letters and choosing our movie selections, to selecting clothes that would suit our look. However, one little piece of tech that’s catching a lot of attention, the Ai Pin, really shows you how AI is going to shape your day to day interactions in the years to come.

The Ai Pin by Humane is something straight out of Startrek. The first wearable device and software platform built to harness the full power of artificial of AI, the Ai Pin marks a new beginning for personal consumer technology in the way the computer mouse did. This little device, available in three colours, typically worn on the shirtfront or collar, offers users the ability to take the power of AI with them on an entirely new, conversational and screenless journey, one that will redefine their relationship with the technology.
So what does it do? Well, you can tap it and speak to it as if you were speaking to your friends, allowing you to dictate messages (it even helps you improve the text); hold up objects for it to recognise (a great feature when you need to know the nutritional info of a food product); use its Catch Me Up function to sort through your over-worked email inbox (a ‘beacon light’ tells you the pin has info or messages waiting for you); use hand gestures to communicate demands; and even project its laser ink display onto your palm.

You can also make calls (via its parsonic speaker or Bluetooth headphones), check the time, weather and local attractions; harness the power of AI to take photographs or take videos to chronology your day-to-day with its ultra-wide RGB camera, which features depth and motion sensors.
The pin, which is made up of two parts connected magnetically, a Snapdragon-powered Cosmos-operating computer and a battery booster that can be swapped out when it needs recharging, can even act as your foreign language translator (in your own voice) and foreign currency converter; count objects in its view, play music, shop just by pointing it at an object you like, and reach into the cloud to access software and features as you need them, meaning no apps to download.

Now, the company promises that the Ai Pin, unlike some tech (Alexa!) isn’t always listening to you (a ‘trust light’ illuminates when it does), and needs to be interacted with first, by voice, touch or gesture. This helps with the battery life. And if someone try hacking it, it’s programmed to shut down automatically.
The only thing it doesn’t do is beam you up. Well, not yet.
