In the latest release of Monkey 47 Distiller’s Cut, the acclaimed German gin taps the ancient spice souks of the Middle East.
At the conclusion of World War II, Commander Montgomery “Monty” Collins, of the Royal Air Force, sought peace and tranquility in Germany of all place, opening a country guest home in the Black Forest that he nicknamed The Wild Monkey. Of course, he had a lot of time on his hands here in the beautiful forest, a region famed for its distillations, so it wasn’t long until he had perfected his own gin recipe, which he would serve to guests at the lodge.
Monty’s gin, which was laced with botanicals sourced from the Black Forest, including spruce shoots and lingonberries, was resurrected by Alexander Stein, and the resulting Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin has been a powerhouse at the forefront of the modern gin movement ever since.
Now, for true purists, the company also makes an annual Distiller’s Cut, a gin that continues the spirit of innovation and imagination that forged the original recipe, and this year’s release is no exception, with the Monkey team turning to the ancient spice souks of the Middle East for inspiration.
Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin Distiller’s Cut 2019 is a gin unlike any other; spiced with nutmeg seeds and mace, a spice brought to Europe by Arab merchants in the 11th century, this oh-so-special gin is double distilled before being left to mature in earthenware containers for three months, after which it’s combined with soft Black Forest spring water to produce a spirit that’s piquant yet elegant, with delicate, subtly resinous top notes that lend it a unique complexity that we’re sure every gin lover will appreciate.
Especially Monty.
