Part of a trilogy of new openings, Ella is just the sexy hidden spot that Hong Kong music lovers so sorely needed.
Even if jazz isn’t your thing and you can’t tell your Miles from Coletrane, you’re likely to have heard the name Ella Fitzgerald. Also known as the First Lady of Song, and the Queen of Jazz, Ella was a talent all on her own, and one famed for the purity, elegance and diction of her singing voice. She’s also the inspiration behind Hong Kong’s newest live music speakeasy.

Part of The Trilogy, a three venue space at Central Hong Kong’s H-Code complex that includes Keys Nightclub and Wav Rooftop Bar, Ella Live Music Bar is the newest creation of Singular Concepts (you’ll know them for the likes of Yurakucho, lively Barkada and cosy Tell Camellia). This sublime, pint-sized, lofty speakeasy, which pays homage to Ella’s home and the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, combines stunning cityscape vistas with smooth jazz and innovative mixology to create the most exciting new opening so far this year, and certainly one of the city’s best spots for date night.
Here, amidst banquette booths and a few bar perches (or book ahead for one of the coveted piano seats), you’ll be transported to post-prohibition bliss with cocktails inspired by the Deep South classic – think the Roasted Boulevardier, the iconic (and heady) Hurricane is adored by the diva and her pal Frank Sinatra, and the lingering Louie Sazerac.

You can pair your libations with bar bites straight from the bayou, including immensely popular tater tots, Rockefeller oysters, and the palate-pleasing New Orleans Muffuletta, made with a mouthwatering combination of mortadella, salami, prosciutto, smoked provolone, mozzarella, and homemade olive salsa.
While the drinks are great – and they really are a refreshingly authentic homage to the classics – you’re likely here for the music, which, every Wednesday to Saturday from 8 pm (expect more after the soft opening period), includes a mix of jazz, soul, R&B, pop, and Latin, creating an unforgettable experience for guests every Wednesday to Saturday during the soft opening, starting from 8pm onwards.
