If you’ve been looking for the ultimate addition to your watch collection, some very special timepieces are coming up for auction next month.
There’s nothing better than adding a new timepiece to your personal collection – the decision-making process, the anticipation of waiting for your new arrival, the sense of achievement that comes with your new purchase. However, any collector will admit that there are watches and then there are real collectables. The Philips Racing Pulse auction, which has been touring the globe, is scheduled for December 12 in New York, and is packed with the iconic pieces.
A couple of notable pieces include a striking Heuer Monaco Ref. 1133, worn by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans and gifted by the action to chief mechanic Haig Alltounian as a thank you for keeping the Million Dollar Man safe and sound. The back of the timepiece even bares an engraving commissioned by McQueen: To Haig Le Mans 1970. The watch hasn’t seen the outside of a safety deposit box for much of the last 50 years and is a true treasure for watch lovers.
Another piece to look out for is the late Paul Newman’s Big Red Rolex Daytona, Ref. 6263, which was given to the actor by his wife Joanne Woodward in 1983 for the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary. The timepiece is inscribed “Drive slowly Joanne” in reference to Newman’s love of motor racing, and proceeds from its sale will go to charities supported by the couple.
There’s having a nice watch, and then there’s carrying history on your wrist.
