As brands start to take sea pollution more seriously, Tom Ford releases the world’s first timepiece made entirely from ocean plastic.
Whereas ethical community relations were the big push for luxury brands in the first decade of the century, with a focus on, in 2020 it’s all about the seas. From Omega to Adidas to Prada, brands are looking to employ ocean plastics into their lines while raising awareness of the impact our plastic-addicted society is having on the seas, with more than eight million tons of plastic entering the oceans every year.
The new Tom Ford Ocean Plastic Timepiece is the first luxury watch to be made entirely from ocean plastics – in this case, the equivalent of 35 plastic bottles. The Swiss-made watch is made from plastics collected from seas, coastlines, and uncontrolled landfills, with all materials traceable to their point of collection. But wait, there’s more; transportation of the ocean plastic granules used in the watch’s construction is carbon neutral and the compounding in Switzerland is powered by solar energy. Even the packaging is recyclable.
The Tom Ford Ocean Plastic timepiece will retail for US$995 and will be available at Tom Ford boutiques worldwide, as well as online starting in November, 2020.
