Nespresso has released another single-origin coffee, this time from the depths of Uganda, as part of its Reviving Origins program.
So you ‘re probably familiar with the single-origin when it comes to coffee (and an increasing number of other products). At face value, the term simply means coffee that’s grown in a single, known geographic location, meaning a farm, or multiple farms from the same region or country.
However, the underlying importance of the concept is far more poignant; it’s about recognising the impact of mass production and homogenisation, and the rapidly-growing interest in knowing where the things we buy come from, and who benefits from their sale.

Recognising the need for transparency and sustainability within the global coffee industry, Nespresso‘s Reviving Origins program, which launched in 2019, works with smallholding farmers in regions where coffee cultivation is under threat to promote sustainability. The result of this outreach is that consumers gain access to single-origin coffee varieties that, without the helping hand, might disappear altogether.
Examples of this include Tamuka mu Zimbabwe, a fruity, zesty, and bright coffee from Manicaland province; and Esperanza de Colombia, a mild and beautifully-balanced variety from Caquetá. These two exquisite and rare coffees that were virtually unknown, and had been slowly disappearing for decades. Through the development of infrastructure, including wet mills and coffee cooperatives, Nespresso has not only helped save these coffee varieties for your hand-shaking, heart-thumping pleasure but also bolstered the farms who grow them.

Nespresso has now released Amaha awe Uganda, or Hope for Uganda in the local Lhukonzo language, a new seasonal coffee from the country’s Rwenzori Mountains made possible only through the Reviving Origins program.
In Uganda, climate change, poor farming practices, and economic hardship have meant that the production of high-quality coffee has been a challenge over recent years. As part of the Reviving Origins program and in partnership with Agri Evolve, a young agribusiness dedicated to improving farmer productivity, Nespresso is working with more than 2,000 farmers, providing training and expertise to improve coffee quality and productivity in addition to establishing sustainable farming practices.
