Nikon joins the mirrorless arms race with the ground-breaking new Nikon Z7 and Z6 full-frame cameras.
Mirrorless cameras have until recently been the domain of small, point-and-shoot devices that offer consumer-level performance in a compact body. Sony upped the ante with its powerful alpha series but that wasn’t enough to convince many professional shooters that the days of mirrored sensors was coming to an end. The newest releases from Nikon just might change their minds.
The new Z-mount mirrorless cameras feature new, larger-diameter mounts, which in turn let more light in, and are packed with features that photographers have long been waiting for from the brand. Powered by an Expeed 6 image processor, the new cameras are equipped with a new backside illumination and a Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels. The Z 7 has a whopping 45.7 effective megapixels and supports a standard sensitivity range of ISO 64-25,600.

The Z 6 is a more all-purpose digital mirrorless SLR, with an FX-format sensor with 24.5 effective megapixels, and an ISO range of 100-51,200. Offering superior performance at high sensitivities and full-frame 4K UHD movie recording with full pixel readout, the Z 6 responds to a variety of needs, such as shooting in dimly lit environments, and movie recording.
Other perks of the newcomers include an electronic viewfinder that utilizes Nikon’s superior optical and image-processing technologies to offer a clear and natural view; an ergonomic design that’s both compact and easy to hold; enhanced movie functions including 10-bit N-Log that captures a wide dynamic range, and timecoding; and Nikon’s first in-camera vibration reduction technology.
Dust and drip-resistant as the market-leading D850, the Z 7 and Z 6 feature an 8cm touch-sensitive LCD monitor with tilting mechanism; a silent photography function, high-speed continuous shooting (although they still lag behind many other brands), and 8k time-lapse movie creation.
Although a new range of lenses has been created specifically for the Z series, existing Nikkor lenses will be compatible with the use of an adapter.
