Scottish single malt The Macallan is set to release an undeniably luxurious whisky that, at 72 years, is older than you might ever get.
In its oldest bottling ever, The Macallan has announced a luxurious new whisky for collectors with deep pockets. The Macallan 72 Year Old, which comes in a stunning Lalique crystal “Genesis” decanter designed by Burgess Studio and which is presented in a handcrafted glossy luxe wooden case by cabinet makers NEJ Stevenson, will be priced at US$60,000 a piece, when it’s officially released in August.
Age expressions may be falling out of vogue with whisky producers and drinkers alike but the new release still has the credentials to turn heads. A “celebration of the collaboration of masters from across the fields of whisky, crystal, architecture, construction and craftsmanship”, The Macallan 72 Year Old dram, which was distilled in the 1940s, has been bottled at 42%ABV and is, as you can imagine, limited to just 600 individually-numbered bottles, giving the entire release a value of US$36 million (which works out at about US$12,000 a pour).
For those willing to spend a princely sum on a bottle of Scotch, they’ll discover touches of fruit followed by distinctive hints of peat and sweet oak, with a lingering finish.
