Iconic Maldivian resort Soneva Fushi will open its first overwater villas next spring, offering paradise-bound travellers a truly unique retreat.
So, you’ve decided to head to the Maldives, where the sun is hot and the cocktails cool, the sunsets mesmerizing and the lagoons vibrant. You’re not alone; hundreds of thousands of travellers visit the Indian Ocean archipelago each year, and many are looking for one particular experience – the overwater bungalow.
It may not seem like much but compared to the number of beachfront resorts clinging to land from Fiji to Tahiti, overwater villas that offer guests the chance to spend the night directly over the lapping waters of a tropical lagoon are pretty rare. Fortunately, you can coincide your visit to the Maldives with the arrival of the destination’s newest overwater houses of slumber.
Soneva Fushi has been one of the Maldives’ leading (and most environmentally sustainable) resorts for two decades now, but the only thing it lacked was those iconic overwater villas strung out like so many pearls on satin seas – until now. The Baa Atoll resort will unveil eight one and two-bedroom Water Retreats in April, each adhering to the resort’s Robinson Crusoe-esque mantra of “no news, no shoes” as well as the strictest sustainable philosophies.
You’ll access your new home-away-from-land via a gently curving jetty, which ensures that these Water Retreats offer the ultimate in luxury and privacy. You’ll be able to choose from either a One Bedroom Water Retreat with Slide or the two-bedroom equivalent, which is great if you’re travelling with friends; each retreat boasts extensive sun decks, a private pool, a dining sala, day beds, signature outdoor bathrooms, and a curving slide that leads directly into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Just to ensure a feel a sense of place somewhere between the seas and the heavens, the ceiling of the master bedroom retracts at the press of a button, revealing a canopy of stars each evening.
Leave land to the masses.
