A new biography by sportswriter Tom Callahan tells the story of one of golf’s greats, Arnold Palmer.
Arnold Palmer is a golfer that’s left a legacy that goes well beyond having a mocktail named after him. The winner of more than 90 championships, including great matches like the Masters, which he won four times, Palmer, who died in 2016, was a legend of the great game, a larger than life character who is remembered for his powerful drivers, ice-cold nerves, and down-to-earth rapport with fans.

But Palmer was more than just a golfer, he was a visionary, an entrepreneur, and a marketer. He was one of the first golfers to recognise the potential of a personal brand, signing multi-million dollar contracts, with the help of agent Mark McCormick, well before it became the norm to do so in international sports.
In Arnie: The Life of Arnold Palmer, Callahan, author of His Father’s Son: Earl and Tiger Woods, and who knew Palmer for many years, pays tribute to his friend, a golfing icon, and fills the pages of the new tome with brilliant anecdotes and stories from Palmer’s life, as well as those whom he loved.
There is a significant contribution from fellow champion Gary Player, as well as the results of exhaustive interviews and research on the part of Callahan, who covers both light-hearted topics as well as more serious issues, ranging from Palmer’s friendship with Bob Hope, Fred Rogers, and President Eisenhower; and his complex relationship with his father, Ben Hogan; to Augusta National’s race policy; and his rivalry with Jack Nicklaus.
