So you’re looking for a quick escape to a hotel that inspires and invigorates? We think ‘Wonderland’ might tick all the right boxes.
Built within an abandoned quarry in southwestern Shanghai, the new InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland lives up to its name. Stretching 88 metres underground, the new hotel was nominated as one of the architectural wonders of the world by the National Geographic Channel’s MegaStructures series due to its pioneering architectural design.
The hotel combines signature InterCon luxury with a revolutionary design that’s mostly subterranean, with two floors above ground and 16 below ground, including two floors underwater. Individually designed to capture the essence of its unique setting, the hotel’s 336 rooms and suites offer plenty of space and creature comforts, as well as spectacular views of waterfalls and the surrounding cliffs.
Of course, you’ll want to check into one of the stunning, James Bond-esque underwater loft, which offers two awe-inspiring levels: the landing deck at water level houses the outdoor terrace and living room, whilst the underwater bedrooms are encased within a turquoise aquarium where guests will be surrounded by the schools of fish that swim by. All hotel rooms on the bottom floor are provided with around-the-clock butler service, just in case you run out of essential supplies.
Be sure to leave time for fresh seafood at Mr Fisher, or to work your way through the Scotch collection at The Quarry, a chic speakeasy where premium spirits are served over custom-cut ‘quarry ice’.
