Virgin Voyages promises to change the way you look at cruise holidays.
So, we appreciate that it’s probably not the best time to be launching any travel-related companies, especially a cruise line, given all the drama that’s unfolded in Yokohama Harbour of late. That said, cruises tend to be things you book well in advance and Sir Richard Branson’s new cruise line, Virgin Voyages is not one you’ll want to miss.

Firstly, forget all you think you know about cruises. On the flamboyant billionaire’s new line, the first vessel of which, the Scarlet Lady, was recently unveiled in Dover, there won’t be geriatric aquarobics classes, high tea serenaded by string quartets, buffets that resemble rugby scrums, or socks proudly displayed within sandals. Instead, the new adult’s only cruise line promises tattoo studios, yoga sessions, resident DJs and about as much fun as you can have in international waters.
The Scarlet Lady, the first of four planned ships, will cater to 2,700 passengers and will offer the shorter, punchier itineraries that are helping cruise lines navigate away from the older cruise market and towards younger, more virial shores.

Far from the ‘holding pattern for the dead’ mantra of most cruise ships, the Virgin vessels will boast more than 20 food and beverage outlets apiece, including speciality coffee bars, drag queen cabaret, and mixology divans, as well as chic public spaces, sexy guest cabins – we think you’ll love the 15 Mega RockStar Suites – an abundance of sports activities, and contemporary wellness enclaves. And not a child in sight!
The Scarlet Lady will begin four- and five-night Caribbean cruises from its base in Miami from April.
