Need to get away from the city for a few days of clear air and an even clearer mind? Perhaps you need to escape to new Six Senses Bhutan.
If you were looking for an excuse to visit Bhutan (and you should) then the first thing you’re probably considering is where you’ll rest your head. Six Senses Bhutan, a collection of five boutique lodges set in the western and central valleys of Bhutan, each with its own character, environment and experiences, is set to open in the Himalayan kingdom this month.
Beginning with the capital, Six Senses Thimphu places strong emphasis on incorporating the spirit of the grand architectural elements of a dzong (fortress) and clouds, thereby lending the name of Palace in the Sky to the largest in the collection.
The second is Six Senses Punakha (pictured), located in the relatively low-lying valley of Punakha, which takes inspiration from the farms and vegetable terraces across the valley and the traditional cantilever bridges that crisscross its Alpine rivers. In the quaint glacial valley of Phobjikha, famous as the winter residence of black-necked cranes, Six Senses Gangtey is fondly called the Traditional Birdwatching Bridge, due to its principal bridge-like building, which boasts a large glass area overlooking the valley.
Also in central Bhutan, Six Senses Bumthang is located in an ancient evergreen pine forest, while Six Senses Paro overlooks its famed namesake valley. The Thimphu, Paro and Punakha resorts are taking reservations now, with Gangtey and Bumthang resorts set to open in early 2019.
