Need sneakers that skip the anguish of bending down and tying knots? ‘Course you do! The Puma Self-lacing Shoe is here.
Ever since Back to the Future Part II was released in 1990 the adolescent teenager in all of us has yearned to own sneakers that self-lace. A lucky few were able to glimpse into this brave new world when Nike released the self-lacing “Hyperadapt” in 2016, but their absurdly limited release left many wanting more.
The Future Has Arrived
That is until now. Puma has taken the mantle with plans to bring the masses ‘back’ to the future; the brand’s more affordable, less exclusive, yet equally dapper Puma FI Self-Lacing Shoe is set for a 2020 release and already have us biting at the bit.
“FI” stands for Fit Intelligence, which is an understatement, especially when you consider that these sneakers have more bells and whistles than a drunken rodeo. The main feature is a motorised mechanism that fits under the tongue of the shoe. This contraption controls the laces, which can be tightened by swiping up or down on the motor’s interactive panel, or through Puma’s mobile app.
Tech-Savvy Sneakers
I know what you’re thinking: “Who in the world is too lazy to tie their own shoe?” The Puma FIs, however, is more than just a convenient excuse to splash some cash; they also come with a computerized sensor which analyses the shape of each user’s foot and adapts the shoe’s interior to match – and what’s more – the shoes can link up to an Apple Watch via Bluetooth, meaning that users can make on-the-fly adjustments at the tap of a virtual button.
The technology that these sneakers incorporate is not just a stupid gimmick, but the future of footwear. So pull your head out the sand: turn on, tune in and check it out.
