With cityscape views from its balcony and rooftop, chic cocktail bar Tokyo Confidential has opened in the Japanese capital’s Azabujuban neighborhood.
Tokyo is a city that knows a thing or two about intimate watering holes. The city is famed for its speakeasies and its eclectic robot bars and vibrant izakayas and now, joining the fray, is Tokyo Confidential, an unpretentious yet elegant cocktail divan with views to Tokyo Tower.

The main bar space has the vibe of a contemporary canteena, complete with vibrant art by Argentinian graphic designer and illustrator Alan Rhys Berry and US-based Ravi Zupa that wreath a show-stopping pine bar top carved from 300-year-old reclaimed shrine wood that snakes through the main room.
The new venue’s menu, conceptualised by founder Holly Graham and head bartender Waken Murata ranges from low and no-ABV concoctions to heady classics, with drinks showcasing Japanese ingredients in creative ways, such as the stirred and spirit-forward Destroy All Monsters, with miso brown butter-washed gin, manzanilla sherry, bianco vermouth and ponzu, or the effervescent Go Lightly with Doburoku, with awamori, elderflower, tomato, verjus and sparkling wine.
Expect cheeky nods to nostalgia, as well as drinks celebrating iconic places and people in the industry, as seen with Julio’s House, featuring tequila, agave nectar, roasted lime, ancho brine and Sel de Gusano, a homage to Tommy’s Margarita creator Julio Bermejo.
The cocktail menu is accompanied by an extensive selection of champagne, with rare and exclusive pours available by the glass for a taste, while the “Drink Up” concept lets the team dish out something special, giving guests a chance to try unique spirits, wines or Champagnes by the glass at break-even prices. If you already have your passion spirits, opt for one of the bar’s spirit lockers, where you can store your favourite libation for your next visit.

High-end bar bites created by chef Daniel Calvert of SÉZANNE include the Everything Bagel, with cream cheese and 30g of Kristal caviar; chocolate madeleines with rum cream; and coronation chicken monaka.
