It’s almost that time of year again (at least in some places), Asia’s fleeting winter. As short-lived as it might be (sorry Singapore), the mercury can drop quickly, and that means you need to be prepared with a casual winter jacket that fits both your look and the season. Here are some of our new favourites.
There’s nothing worse than not being dressed for the weather. It either means you need to adjust your plans, or it means you’ll end up somewhere, wet and cold and probably miserable. Just like it’s smart to always have an umbrella during the monsoon season, it’s important to have a go-to jacket made of performance material that ensures the heat stays in and the rain stays out. Sure, it might look a little too casual when you arrive at the office, but a guy prepared for the onslaught of Mother Nature looks much better than a snob who opted for style over comfort.
ThermoBall Eco Jacket
The North Face knows a thing or two about keeping lads warm, whether they’re enjoying a little alfresco après-ski in Niseko or climbing in the Pakora Valley. The ThermoBall Eco Jacket lends itself to both the actual and the city casual look and guarantees to keep you toasty without making you look like a polar explorer. Available in a range of colours and patterns (we prefer navy blue), this jacket is made from post-consumer recycled material and is lightweight yet features ThermoBall Eco insulation for warmth even when wet. The jacket has an internal zipped pocket for lift-passes and smartphones and a hem cinch-cord for when the weather packs in.
The ReNew Short Parka
Stylish yet effective, the Re-New Short Parka from Everlane is made from 100 percent recycled polyester (with each jacket made from 55 renewed plastic bottles) and features a zip-off hood, fleece-lined pockets, and an interior chest pocket with snap closure. Water-resistant and insulated with PrimaLoft, the jacket is hip-length and better suited for colder climes.
GORE-TEX Packable Rain Jacket
If you’re just looking for a shell jacket that can keep you drive on the way to the office, the Gore-Tex Packable Rain Jacket by Marmot is extra foldable, light-skinned and very water-resistant. Made from 100 percent recycled PFC-free water-repellent fabric, the jacket boasts a wind-blocking hydrophobic (you got to love that, it’s actually afraid of water!) membrane. You can throw it into a backpack or messenger bag on days that look ominous and rip it out as soon as the first drops start falling.
Fission SV Jacket
If you’re one of those guys that freezes in the air conditioning and turns blue when the wind whips up, the Fission SV is the warmest fully waterproof jacket in the Arc’Teryx Essentials collection. Designed for wicked weather, the jacket features a Gore-Tex membrane that shields you from wind and rain and a special collar-hood combo that allows you to really wrap up.
Wilmington Quilted Nylon Down Hooded Jacket
Better suited for city living than some of the brand’s bulkier jackets, the Wilmington Quilted Nylon Down Hooded Jacket by Canada Goose is a lightweight, packable casual winter jacket that has enough down to keep you warm wherever you’re headed. It features a drawstring hood, chin guard, ribbed trims, two front welt pockets, and an interior zipped pocket. Even better, it’s machine washable.
