If you’re looking for a manly bite that sates all your primal urges, it’s tricky to pass up the simple but oh-so-effective steak frites, and now Hong Kong’s District 8 Bistro takes the concept to the next level.
In the words of fictitious Formula One driver Jean Girard in Talladega Nights, when asked what the French have given the world: “We invented democracy, existentialism, and the ménage à trois.” While those are three great things, he was missing one other – steak frites. Now, while Belgium also claims to have invented this superbly simplistic combination, it’s the French who make the most noise about their involvement.

Either way, it’s a great dish and one that’s now bring elevated at Hong Kong’s District 8 Bistro, where hungry lads can choose from a selection of signature premium steak cuts from various free-range farms in Australia.
From the tender melt-in-your-mouth goodness of filet mignon to the robust, marbled richness of ribeye, each cut of steak offers a unique palate experience when carefully trimmed and placed on a high-temperature grill to be seared to perfection. The grill forms an instantaneous crust around the meat, trapping natural juices to enrich the flavour as it’s served with hand-cut triple-cooked thick frites, Café de Paris sauce, veal jus and charred onions on the side.
Do yourself a favour and try the 350 gram Barcoo Flank from grain-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free Angus cattle from New South Wales’ “golden triangle”; the 200-day grain-fed Yarabah Ribeye, renowned for its tenderness, andmarbling; or the Halal-certified and hormone-free S. Kidman Striploin (no relation to Nicole), sourced from Kidman cattle (a blend of French-bred Charolais and Wagyu) raised in Northern Australia.
There’s also the 280 gram Ranger Valley Hanger, a superb bit of Black Angus-Wagyu cross known as the ‘butcher’s cut’; the O’Connor Filet Mignon, a small, lean, and and exceptionally tender cut known for its buttery texture and delicate flavour; and the hefty O’Connor Bone-in Ribeye that’s well worth sharing.
Perhaps over a toast to la revolución?
