It’s been 47 years since Land Rover launched the original Range Rover. Almost half a century later, that spirit of innovation continues with the introduction of the fourth member of the Range Rover family, the Velar.
One of the most anticipated SUVs to be launched this year, the 2018 Range Rover Velar has all the glamour we’ve come to expect from the noble beast, as well as plenty of power and a host of new features that are sure to impress; in fact, elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach, and all-new consumer technologies have become the hallmarks of the new Range Rover Velar.

The Velar takes its name from one of the first Range Rover prototypes, a model that dates back to the 1960s. When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rover vehicles – which are now considered the pioneers of the luxury SUV landscape – they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin ‘velare’ meaning to veil or cover. The new model has already been dubbed the ‘avant-garde’ Range Rover thanks to its enhanced refinement, and will fit snuggly between existing models the Evoque and the larger Sport.

Refined for every occasion and for various terrains, the Range Rover Velar uses unique sustainable materials and advanced engineering to continue Land Rover’s drive to go above and beyond. The most aerodynamically-inclined model in the lineup (which isn’t saying all that much given the brand’s iconic boxy lines), the Velar features new specially-designed air channels in the rear spoiler to help reduce drag as well as the accumulation of dirt on the rear screen.
Other highlights include the marque’s Terrain Response 2 system which offers all-terrain progress control and additional traction when you’re heading off piste; a new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system accessed through two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens; and deployable door handles.

There are also Matrix Laser-LED headlights; numerous driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking; and a choice of six engines, including a six-cylinder turbocharged petrol version, which produces 221kW of power and can propel this graceful stead from zero to hero in 5.7 seconds.
Not bad for a people mover.
