The Mixing Room takes its inspiration from Sutton’s own experience in the iron ore mines of Western Australia and which inspired his children’s books, which describe a band of grumpy miners trapped underground and tasked with forging iron fairies from the ore. As an independent genesis concept to Sutton’s acclaimed Iron Fairies bars, the new venue focuses on the chapter where the miners refer to their “Fairy Casting Formula Book” with which they create the mystical fairies.

Furnished in raw iron, hand-hewn timber, and soft, supple and tufted leather, the space caters for 60 guests – expect custom furnishings, low-slung ceilings, and brick-textured walls adorned with over 22,000 jars and bottles containing fairy dust, poems and all sort of mysterious ingredients that in turn inspire cocktails by bar industry veteran Tom Egerton.

Modern and creative, the enchanting cocktail program is inspired by characters from Sutton’s fictional characters and includes Raine in the Gumtree, a cheeky twist on an Old-Fashioned with Glenmorangie X malt whiskey, rum, cognac, bitters and fish sauce-infused caramel; the Fat Guts Martini with Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin, Peddlers Gin, Umami Sake, parmesan-infused spirit, and a hint of basil oil; and Jilo the Bastard, a rift on a Manhattan made with a collection of Australian ingredients that range from Gospel Solera Rye whiskey, and sherry, barrel-aged rum, to house-infused vermouth, distilled banana and Garam Marsala spices.
