One of Hong Kong’s most loved culinary hideaways, The Chinnery begins a new chapter.
There are always new restaurants and bars in Hong Kong – we like to keep tabs on all the new comers – but that doesn’t mean we don’t have time for those classic haunts, those timeless Hong Kong corners of solicitous conversation, whispered deals and clamorous celebration. These are places where the bar keep knows your name, where the food sates your appetite, and where the heritage gives every visit a sense of depth and experience.

Once such place we’re sure you’re familiar with is The Chinnery, an iconic establishment, secreted within that grand old lady, the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, that first flung its double doors open in 1963. Long has this intimate enclave been the favour of deal makers and power brokers, who splurged their expense accounts on homely cuisine and crisp – discrete – service as they captained industries and engineered hostile take overs, all with a fortifying libation in hand. The eatery has now reopened after a subtle yet elegant interior refresh.
Initially designed as a private gentlemen’s club, and maintaining that rich persona to this day, The Chinnery exudes the classic elegance of British colonial style with rich mahogany timber panelling, plush carpets, and luxurious leather furnishings. Named for 19th-century British artist George Chinnery, whose works capture British colonial scenes from his life in India, Macau, and Hong Kong, the new-look venue, with its popular banquette seating and bar top perches welcoming the ambitious and over-leveraged, has also launched a new Taste of The Chinnery menu, available for famished souls through August.

Lads with an appetite can expect bold yet classic flavours – think lamb samosas with fresh mint yoghurt; prime tenderloin tartare; classic Shepherd’s Pie made with organic lamb shoulder; and Indian tikka chicken laced with aromatic spices.
The menu will help you last the distance while you work your way through The Chinnery’s 120-strong single-malt collection, with drams presented from Scotland, Japan, Taiwan, and even India. Complementing this is a focus on classic cocktails – the venue makes one of the city’s best martinis – and whisky pairings, all served by a veteran staff who know exactly the tipple you need, whether you’re celebrating or commiserating.
