Some travellers like to explore unencumbered with technology, but for those that like to bring those newly ventured horizons home with them, a digital camera is a packing essential. Even if the pandemic has you exploring your own backyard rather than jumping on a plane, you can capture great stills and videos that will help preserve those moments for years to come – and for that, you’re going to need the right shooter.
Fortunately, Sony has upgraded its Alpha 7 interchangeable lens camera with the arrival of the Alpha 7 IV, boasting a newly developed 33-megapixel full-frame sensor and more processing power than you’ll probably ever need.
Building on the popular Alpha 7 III, the new Alpha 7 IV features many of Sony’s most advanced imaging technologies, including the latest BIONZ XR processing engine and advanced AF (autofocus) capabilities based on the flagship Alpha 1 model, combined with streamlined operability and enhanced reliability for photos and movies, making it the perfect all-around camera for today’s imaging enthusiasts.
The new Alpha 7 IV is a tech-driven hybrid packed with outstanding still image quality and evolved video technology with advanced autofocus and enhanced operability. The new full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor, an expanded ISO sensitivity range of up to 204800, and a 15-stop dynamic range means you’re only limited by your own creativity while high-speed AF, uninterrupted continuous shooting at 10fps with AF/AE tracking and a large buffer means you won’t miss a moment on the go.

Additionally, for the first time, Real-time Eye AF can now track birds and animals’ eyes for both still images and movies, in addition to humans, the detection accuracy for which has been improved by 30%.
The new shooter also inherits technology taken from real-world movie production including S-Cinetone – adopted from Sony’s highly regarded Cinema Line cameras used by a broad range of filmmakers and content creators – to deliver a rich, cinematic look. High-quality movie is achieved with 4K 60p recording in Super 35mm mode and up to 4K 30p recording with 7K oversampling in full-frame mode. Unique AF features, including AF Assist, Breathing Compensation, and Focus Map, also help deliver more precise autofocus performance when shooting video.
The Alpha 7 IV also features a dual-layer mode dial with the lower layer for selecting Still/Movie/S&Q and the top layer for Auto/P/A/S/M and MR (Memory Recall), enabling users to quickly select and switch between the dedicated settings. In addition, the 5-axis optical in-body image stabilisation offers a 5.5- step shutter speed advantage; an improved grip delivers greater comfort, and an improved OLED Quad-VGA viewfinder offers an upgraded live-view image experience.
The Alpha 7 IV body is built with magnesium alloy to achieve robustness while minimising its weight, in addition to Sony’s original recycled plastic SORPLAS, and is packed in recyclable materials, so you’re keeping your environmental impact to a minimum.
