New York-esque takeaway pizza joint Sonny’s Pizza has arrived in Central Hong Kong’s Elgin Street
Every city in America has its pizza diehards and some city’s even have a reputation for making their pies a certain way. And then there’s New York – you may not agree with how their prepare their pizzas but you have to give the city credit for the way its stamps its identity on the dish. Case in point, Sonny’s Pizza, a new takeaway (or dine on the street) spot on Soho’s Elgin Street, not only breathes a little life into a sadly dead corner of the island, but also proudly does so pizzas, hot dogs and soft serve inspired by the Big Apple.
Perfect for fueling up before a night on the town, or for a quick lunch, the new eatery was conceived by chef Son “Sonny” Pham and Shakib Pasha when they couldn’t find a nice late night pizza option. Sonny’s Pizza promises affordable unpretentious pizzas (isn’t that refreshing Hong Kong?) prepared with premium ingredients, with the chef tapping into his time at Union Square Cafe in New York, Ryugin in Tokyo, and and Amelia in the Fragrant Harbour.
At Sonny’s Pizza, it’s all about the dough, which is fermented for 48 hours and made using both a soft wheat flour and a stronger Manitoba flour, combined with biga, an Italian yeast starter. The extended fermentation period allows the dough to develop a more complex flavour and a chewy crust that is surprisingly light and easy to eat. To top it all off, the dough is all sauced with tantalising sauces made in-house using premium Italian ingredients.

You’ll have a choice of six pies ranging from the Garlic Gang, an innovative yet delicious combination of spicy marinara with mozzarella, double pepperoni and the local’s favourite black garlic (not recommended for date night); and the Kowloon Kid, with lap cheong Chinese sausage, bacon, mozzarella, and red onions; and a classic with a blend of four cheeses. The pizzas are available by the slice or as whole pizzas in two sizes, 12-inches, or 16-inch.
If pizza isn’t really your thing, try one of Randy’s 100 percent beef hotdogs, created by the same team behind the famous local burger shop Honbo. The Classic Dog comes with ketchup and mustard; while the Chicago Dog has sweet pickle and pickled peppers; the Tokyo Dog features Kewpie mayo and homemade okonomiyaki sauce; and the Tommy Dog – named after the famous Californian chilli hot dog – comes drizzled with homemade beef chilli and American cheddar.
You can match your slice or your dog with Milk Soft Serve made with Hokkaido milk by Sean of Sauce, a popular barber shop on Elgin Street, or with a craft beer from local breweries Black Kite and Heroes as well as a rotating list of imported craft beers. Shakib has carefully curated the list to offer beers that pair perfectly with a slice or a hot dog.
