Want to be more productive at work? A new study says you should be swapping out that sandwich at your deck for a quick romp between the sheets.
Contrary to the belief that sex sends all of us into a post-coital fetal position under our desks, a recent study has found that a little day time sugar between the sheets will actually increase productivity.
The study of 159 couples, conducted by researchers at the University of Washington and Oregon State University, found that – surprise, surprise – people who have had their end away in the past 24 hours are generally happier, more positive and yes, more productive.
Now, the fact that getting laid makes you happy isn’t much of a discovery, but the impact of a regular sex life on your productivity just might be, and if nothing else is grounds for you to request access to the executive bathroom at work. The study found that married worker bees who prioritized sex at home were unwittingly giving themselves an advantage at work the next day, thanks in part to the release of dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter, as well as oxytocin, a neuropeptide associated with social bonding, an effect that lasts over 24 hours, giving credibility to the ‘spring in your step’ adage.
Of course, the study also found that bringing work stress home negatively impacted sex lives as well, an issue that affects many workers in today’s 24-7 tech-driven environment. The importance of work-life balance and its impact on productivity (which lead to the French outlawing after hour emails) is something many researchers are now looking at closely.
Perhaps now the age-old line “I’ve got a big day tomorrow” should be a reason to stay rather than leave.
