Following the global success of Canadian comedian Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka, the brand has released an Onyx edition in time for Halloween.
You have to hand it to Dan Aykroyd. Not only was he a comedic icon through the 80s and 90s, thanks to Ghostbusters, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places and so many other classics, but he also jumped on the celebrity booze brand train just as it was leaving the station, releasing his Crystal Head Vodka in an eye-catching skull-shaped bottle in 2008. It would prove to be a brilliant idea, with the skull motif lending the brand to a host of fascinating limited-edition releases and artistic collaborations.

Today, it’s par for the course for any B-grade celebrity to lend his name to a wine or spirit, from Drew Barrymore’s Californian Barrymore Wines, and Channing Tatum’s Born and Bred Vodka, to Justin Timberlake’s Sauza 901 Tequila, and Drake’s Virginia Black Whiskey.
Now, while some of these alternative investments led to ashes, like Mariah Carey’s Angel Champagne, which was described by wine critic Stuart Heritage of the Guardian as “like a bottle of sweat that’s had an AA battery dropped in it, POTUS’ Trump Vodka, and Pharrell Williams’s Qream liqueur, described as a ‘high-end leisure class’ cream spirit, there are also victories, including George Clooney’s sale of his Casamigos tequila for US$1 billion, and Ryan Reynolds’ recent sale of Aviation Gin, to the same conglomerate, for US$610 million.
Now Aykroyd’s Canadian vodka has expanded with the arrival of Onyx, a new agave-based vodka expression presented in a jet black skull. The comedian and self-confessions ‘wild and crazy guy’ promises a spirit that drinks like good quality vodka but with the nuances of Blue Weber agave.

Distilled from agave sourced from a single farm and Newfoundland water that’s filtered through – you’ll love this, 10,000 Herkimer diamonds – the spirit is free of oils, sugars, glycerine, and additives, which is more than we can say for many of the big players in the vodka game.
Expect to find touches of spice and sweetness with a distinctive earthy agave finish that will add dimensions to your favourite martini or Skinny Bitch.
Proof that while there might not be life after death, there’s certainly life after comedy.
