There’s style and then there’s denim, something you crave in your wardrobe but perhaps not on your wrist. Introducing what just might be Omega’s ugliest watch to date.
We’re not sure what’s going on at Omega. The brand is renowned for making timeless watches, the kind of wrist candy worn by the likes of James Bond. But the latest rendition from the Swiss brand is a little more Of Mice & Men than Casino Royale.
Thanks to its reliable design and anti-magnetic properties, the original Omega Railmaster of 1957 was perfectly suited to a role in working-class life. Today, the brand has updated the design with – gulp – a touch of denim that supposedly pays tribute to that industrial past.
Although they are now a fashion item, denim jeans were once manufactured purely for the benefit of hard-working labourers in the American West. For a long time, the robust cloth of dungarees was the choice of miners, factory workers, farmers, and of course, those on the railroads.
To link this iconic material with this new Railmaster, Omega has created a vertically-brushed “blue jeans” dial that features indexes and hands with light-grey Super-LumiNova. There is also a beige lollipop central seconds hand and transferred Railmaster indication that are both reminiscent of the coloured stitching found in denim jeans.
Who knows, it might catch on, but we think some things are best left in the rail yard.
