In sport, every athlete looks for the advantage that will raise their game, and in everything from speed skating to Nascar, this often comes down to weight. With its newest take on the Seamaster, Omega goes ‘Ultra Light’.
Shedding pounds sheds seconds, or so the mantra goes. Watch brand Omega has taken that phrase to heart with the new Seamaster Aqua Terra “Ultra Light”, an intriguing sports watch designed for less weight and more comfort during competition.
To achieve that goal, every feature of the timepiece has been creatively rethought, resulting in a new edge of watchmaking innovation. In fact, behind the development of Omega’s latest Master Chronometer was Rory McIlroy, a major talent in a game in which, ironically, weight is not really a factor.
Light Yet Tough
Available in three colours – red, green or blue – the Seamaster Aqua Terra “Ultra Light” is presented on a sporty fabric strap, and weighs just 55g. The case, caseback and crown are fashioned from an alloy called Gamma Titanium – a first for Omega – a unique material, used in the aeronautical industry due to its very resistant properties, that is harder and lighter than conventional titanium.
Thanks to careful research and trial, Omega also reduced the amount of material used to create the dial. This process further lightened the weight of the watch without affecting its visual impact.
A Push-in Crown for Comfort
Another first for Omega is the watch’s telescopic crown, which can be stowed inside the case when not in use. This ergonomic feature means there is no disturbance to the movement of an athlete’s hands while working up a sweat.
Master Chronometer Power
Shedding the weight did not reduce the watch’s precision or performance. On the inside, the “Ultra Light” is driven by Omega’s first-ever titanium movement, the Calibre 8928 Titanium, a manual-winding calibre with Co-Axial escapement. As a certified Master Chronometer approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), the Calibre 8928 Titanium is resistant to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss. You know, just in case.
