New Zealand has joined the craft spirit scene with bold and imaginative products like Karven Vodka, capturing the essence of this remarkable country.
Not all vodkas are created equal, and never has it been truer than today. If you look at the vodka market as it is, there are new arrivals every day, many of which rely on fancy marketing rather than quality to get ahead. Then again, there are boutique labours of love that drive to create something different, something unique.
Case in point, New Zealand’s Karven Starka Vodka, a unique small-batch spirit laced with the distilling traditions of Eastern Europe, and the world-class artesian waters of New Zealand (the family distillery also does an award-winning gin and a very unique vermouth).
An elegant yet robust grain vodka with a dark, mellow hue completely at odds with most vodkas, Karven Starka is rested in American oak barrels infused with manuka honey and local botanicals, including native kawakawa in a process reminiscent of the traditional Starkas, which were barreled and buried in the earth at the birth of a son, only to be dug up and served at his wedding.
With notes of vanilla and honey on the palate, followed by a lingering spiciness, and a deep amber hue, this vodka makes for a rather spectacular take on a vodka martini, or as the base of springtime concoctions – no marriage or births necessary.
