Kacho Fugetsu is set to bring modern izakaya and contemporary cocktails to the heart of Causeway Bay.
What’s even better than contemporary cocktails served in a slick speakeasy? How about the ability to pop upstairs after said libations for a modern take on timeless izakaya? That’s just what’s in store for Hong Kong diners with the opening next month of Kacho Fugetsu in Causeway Bay.

The dual-concept venue, which is split across two levels in a 5,300sqft modernist space, is the newest creation of the Zeng Group and takes its name from the Japanese philosophy of personal discovery through the appreciation of nature.

With interior design embracing ‘wabi-sabi’ aesthetics of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, and natural objects -including ink artworks of mountain and forest scenery, inspired by the renowned Lake Yamanaka – the ‘urban izakaya’ is a contrasting study in black floors and ceilings set against brilliant white furnishings and anchored by open show kitchens.

Like the decor, the new eatery promises a modern approach to izakaya, with menus laced with jet-fresh sushi and sashimi, smoky ‘kushiyaki’ vegetables’ Japanese-style tapas, kamameshi kettle rice, and ‘new wave’ desserts, with delectable seafood selected at the signature Osusume counter. Look out for the likes of matsuba crab roll with sea urchin topped with caviar; steamed wild-caught Tasmanian abalone with sake; bay lobster with homemade spicy sauce; and leek tempura with grilled tuna.

In contrasting style and mood, the 23/F cocktail lounge is accessed like a hidden chamber down through stairs and a corridor into a darkly theatrical speak-easy.

This subdued, seductive, and welcoming sanctuary, which is dressed in metal, flannel, and stone, and sits beneath a ceiling of decorative lighting twinkling like a starry night, is home to Japanese canapés and an extensive sake list of around 30 labels handpicked by the in-house sommelier. Add a collection of boutique Japanese gins and whiskies and you have a two-level haven for today’s hungry gentleman.
