Hong Kong’s fascination with Spanish cuisine continues with Wan Chai’s new wine and tapas concept BÀRBAR.
While you may think Hong Kong’s love of good food tends to sway towards Japan, the city also has a real crush on Spanish cuisine as well and there’s never a shortage of new openings. The newest is BÀRBAR, a vibrant 50-seat Spanish wine and tapas bar that’s thrust open its doors on Wan Chai’s Ship Street.

BÀRBAR takes its name from the venue’s concept: a Spanish wine bar and a contemporary tapas bar come together as a multi-faceted space that will offer guests the most extensive selection of Spanish wines by the glass in the city. The list, curated by Epicurean Group’s in-house Spanish wine sommeliers, includes several classic and popular wine labels as well as drops from a selection of up-rising new Spanish winemakers and is complemented by an impressive selection of Spanish sherries, artisan craft gins, and sparkling wines. Good to see we now have your attention.
Inspired by the tapas culture of Madrid or Barcelona, BÀRBAR’s culinary concept is helmed by Spanish Chef and Culinary Director Edgard Sanuy Barahona, the creative mind behind popular Spanish contemporary tapas bar Pica Pica in Sheung Wan.
The venue promises to tempt guests with a Spanish ingredients-driven, approachable menu that’s traditional yet playful and which caters to all persuasions and appetites. Many elements of the menu will be created from scratch and will utilise traditional and contemporary methods to present an intriguing yet accessible menu for lunch and dinner.
These delicious creations will be presented against BÀRBAR’s modern, sleek décor, which includes timber, marble and intuitive lighting. The main dining room complements an elegant wine bar area, a communal dining table and a dining counter, where the focus is on the chefs and the action of the open kitchen, with the culinary team adding a theatrical touch to the playful setting.
It’s like taking a perch at Las Ramblas markets without the jet lag.
