If you feel you’ve earned some time off the grid, Elang Private Reserve, a new Java Sea retreat, will offer the ultimate escape from the coal face when it opens in May.
We’re spoken about Bawah Reserve before. You remember, the tropical island near Singapore that’s just begging to be turned into a lair for a James Bond villain? Well, the little island hideaway is set to up the luxury ante with the arrival of Elang Private Residence.

Located on the second of Bawah Reserve’s six islands and developed as the retreat’s ‘owner’s residence’, complete with a small village to accommodate friends, family, kidnapped scientists or loyal henchmen, Elang offers the utmost in privacy and sustainable travel. Every detail is designed to fit seamlessly into the local topography, which is handy when trying to avoid minisub surveillance and is perfect to book as both a single lodge stay or as a whole island escape.

Elang features six cliffside lodges, all constructed with bamboo, driftwood, and hand-cut stone, and boasts soaring ceilings, panoramic views, and hot-and-cold running butler service. The island also features a guest-only clubhouse with a dining room and bar; a saltwater infinity pool with slide, a beachfront restaurant, a dedicated spa situated in a traditional Javanese house, and an activities lawn, for those gin-and-tonic-drenched croquet standoffs.
