This new liqueur from De Kuyper makes crafting one of the world’s most famous classic cocktails at home simply child’s play.
Like so many of the classic libations that can now be found around the world, the origins of the Old Fashioned foggy. It’s said that the first mention of the ‘old fashioned’ cocktail was in the Chicago Daily Tribune in 1880, although Kentucky’s Pendennis Club claims creation cred as well, saying a bartender invented the drink in 1881 in honour of Colonel James E. Pepper, a prominent bourbon distiller.

A classic cocktail in more than just name, this simplistic yet effective blend of booze (usually bourbon but feel free to improvise), bitters, and sugar, the Old Fashioned is one of those drinks with which bartenders mark their skills.

You can now join their ranks, and all you need is the ability to lift one arm and rotate your wrist. While the classic Old Fashioned is made by stirring whiskey, sugar, and bitters (typically Angostura) in a glass, the new De Kuyper Ol’ Fashion Liqueur (yes, they spelt it wrong) turns this intriguing yet arduous process into a very simple one by combining all the ingredients except the base spirit.

The liqueur, which is bottled at 30% ABV, has touches of citrus to replicate the generous orange peel garnish most common in an Old Fashioned, as well as bitter, spicy notes taken from classic bitters. What you’re left with is all the complexity of an endearing drink, without the mess and the need to duck out into the night looking for sugar cubes next time you’re entertaining.
