Named for a royal blessing dating from the Qianlong dynasty, Amanyangyun is probably China’s most anticipated opening this year.
Set to open in a forest glade just outside the dynamic city of Shanghai this month, Amanyangyun isn’t your everyday urban resort.
A story of preservation and innovation, the anticipated new Amanyangyun is made up of a clutch of modern and ancient Ming and Qing dynasty dwellings, wreathed by 1,000-year-old camphor trees, both of which the fruits of a decade-long and unprecedented preservation effort.
Many of the restored homes, as well as some of the trees, were transferred over 700km from Jiangxi Province, where China’s relentless development threatened their existence. Supervised by Jiangxi-born entrepreneur and philanthropist Ma Dadong, a team of engineers and specialists in Chinese architecture were tasked with disassembling, transporting and reconstructing the historic homes from 30 Jiangxi villages.

The result is truly unique hideaway boasting just 26 sumptuous guest spaces – from one-bedroom Club Suites to four-bedroom Antique Villas with pools – each of which features sublime interiors by Kerry Hill Architects that embrace a restful, earthy palette, as well as accents in wood, stone, and bamboo.
But this is more than just a preservation effort. Aman has a name for luxury living and the new resort features a signature Chinese restaurant, a village-style deli, a captivating swimming pool, and a comprehensive Aman Spa. When you’re not soaking your cares away like a Chinese emperor you can try your hand at calligraphy, a spot of yoga, or master the art of the traditional tea ceremony.
